RECENT EXPERIENCE  (2015 to Present)

U.S. ENDOWMENT FOR FORESTRY & COMMUNITIES, INCLed team of technical experts who created the data used by the Blue Ribbon Commissioners to assess the national capacity for forest research in the United States.  Bench marked the U.S. situation against recent activities in Canada and Europe.  Wrote the appendices and contributed substantially to the final report.

SIXTH GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL OUTLOOK (GEO6) REPORT,  United Nations Environment Program.  Served as land cover and land use change technical expert for the North American regional team for GEO6.  Contributed to the North American regional report,  Serving as peer reviewer for the land use and land cover section of the global report.

RILEY MEMORIAL FOUNDATIONWrote "Forest Service Research and Development:  Creating the Knowledge Needed to Manage America's Forests Sustainably."  Documents 57 recent research accomplishments benefiting America's forests and forest sector.

SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW, Society of American Foresters.  Organized and hosted 7 regional dialogues on science needs to better manage forests sustainably.  Synthesized common messages from the dialogues and provided feedback to support Forest Service R&D strategic planning.  Delivered oral presentations on findings at 2017 SAF national convention.  Two journal articles published.

UNITED NATIONS FOOD & AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION.  Co-authored report on using criteria and indicators for sustainable forest management.  The report provided case studies of how countries spanning the development spectrum have used criteria and indicators to inform policy decisions.  For countries who want to strengthen their ability to practice results-based management of national forest programs, the report recommends using existing criteria and indicators rather than inventing new ones.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE.  Participated on the strategic planning client group for the Mcintire-Stennis Strategic Plan, developed for NIFA.

SMALL PRIVATE FOREST LANDOWNER ASSISTANCEProvided forest management advice to landowners.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE   (1996 to Present)

MONTREAL PROCESS WORKING GROUP for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Temperate and Boreal Forests.  The process is an alliance of 12 countries accounting for 90% of the world’s temperate and boreal forests, 60% of all forests, 45% of international trade in wood and wood products, and 35% of the world’s population.  Working together in a voluntary, non-legally binding partnership, the countries developed a set of 7 criteria and 67 indicators tracking various aspects of progress towards sustainable forest management.  For a decade, Guldin was the United States' head of delegation to the MPWG, leading all negotiations and deliberations with other countries.  He also led the development of the first two National Reports on Sustainable Forests  for the United States.

INTERNATIONAL UNION OF FOREST RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONSIUFRO is the world's leading global network of research institutions; some 700 members representing federal and provincial research institutions, universities, and corporate laboratories.  Guldin led the following:

​

  • Led task force on "Working at the Forest Science-Policy Interface."  Organized three regional conferences (Costa Rica, India, Denmark) that collected 60 case studies describing successes and failures of science influencing policy.  Led the panel of international experts who reviewed the case studies and identified common threads and themes, and was lead author of the task force report.  

​

  • Chaired the Congress Organizing Committee, IUFRO'S XXIV World Congress.  Led the team that organized and hosted the largest gathering of forest researchers ever held in North America.

WORLD FORESTRY CONGRESS.  Member of U.S. delegation and presented research papers at the 2003 World Forestry Congress (Quebec City) and 2009 World Forestry Congress (Buenos Aires).  U.S. representative on the Congress Resolutions writing team for the 2009 Congress.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE VISITSLed or participated in bi-lateral TAVs to help countries develop or improve their forest inventory and monitoring programs and resource analysis capacities (Nepal, India, Mexico, Brazil) and collaboration between Canada, USA, and Mexico to improve consistency of reporting for North America.
